A movie is a film or television program that tells a story through images and sound. Usually, this is done by shooting video footage using cameras and microphones on sets and around locations, and then editing the footage together. The images in movies typically appear in stark contrast to reality, with special effects such as computer-generated imagery adding to this effect. Sound is recorded live during the filming process, using heavy equipment such as microphones. A movie can be any length. The special visual effects in movies are created using camera tricks and computer-generated images, which are made by digital artists who use software to put together images of imagined objects or environments. Movies are shows that are meant to be seen in a theater or on the television, with the audience watching from very close up. This is different from television shows seen in theaters on film at home, when viewers watch the show from much farther away. Meryl Streep is an actress who appeared in several movies including "The Devil Wears Prada" and "August: Osage County". Some movies are the result of a book's novelization, part of which has been filmed. Movies were first invented in the late 1880s by Thomas Edison and his assistant William K. L. Dickson, who created a device to record on a card with celluloid film (like video tape). An early favorite of filmmakers was "The Great Train Robbery," filmed in 1903 and shot in 35 mm nitrate film without sound. By 1914, the development of Vitaphone and talking pictures allowed the filming of sound movies and eventually led to feature-length films that were released multiple times a week (so they could be more profitable). The first film award was created in 1928. The Oscars are awarded for the best movie of the year, as voted on by the Academy. The Academy is a worldwide movie organization based in Los Angeles, California. Films are often adaptations of books; for example, there are over 20 different versions of "Les Misérables", all based on the original Victor Hugo novel. A book is usually made into a film by first making a screenplay (a set of instructions about what will happen in each scene). The film maker then chooses actors and actresses to play certain roles on screen, and tells them how they should perform. The actors all rehearse together in the studio to learn their lines and put on the film. Then the film is shot; this process may be done both in various locations, and through various cameras (see below). Eventually, the director edits the footage into a film. It is then shown in theaters (or at home) for many people to see it. This way, there are no bad takes; if an actor makes an error, he or she can redo it before showing it to everyone. The director may also supervise shooting of special effects (e.g., explosions) or make fine adjustments like shooting at different times of day or night. cfa1e77820
